Sasha Spielvogel: A Journey Through Dance

Driven by a passion for dance, Sasha Spielvogel arrived in New York City in 1974, where she completed her B.A. at the Gallatin School of Individualized Study at NYU. Initially, she danced for other choreographers in the NYC dance scene, but something was missing. The artistic fulfillment she craved was nowhere to be found, prompting her to take a bold step —she started choreographing her own works and founded the Sasha Spielvogel Dance Company in 1979.

By 1990, Sasha decided it was time for a change. Inspired by the ancient Greek Labyrinth, she wanted to create a powerful entity to better express her artistic vision. Thus, Labyrinth Dance Theater was born. The name symbolized a journey into a complex, transformative experience, much like the ancient Labyrinth itself and better represented the work she was doing.

The first major showcases of Sasha’s work took place at the Nikolais/Louis Choreolab in 1989 and the 14th Street Y in 1990. These performances were pivotal, marking her emergence as a significant force in the dance community. One of these notable premieres, *Waltz for a Shattered World* was a collaboration with Mimi Stern-Wolfe of the Downtown Chamber Players which featured 12 dancers, an original score by Avishai Yaar, performed by a live 7- piece orchestra conducted by Ms. Stern-Wolfe.

Sasha’s creative journey is closely intertwined with that of international dance soloist Felicia Norton, a friendship and professional partnership that has spanned 50 years. Together, they have created 10 dances, showcasing work in New York and across five international countries and festivals. Their collaborations include memorable pieces like *NOOR*, *Slither*, *Five Stalks of Wheat*, and *Backstreet*, which also features the Finnish dance star Hannu Hyttinen.

In addition to live performances, Sasha ventured into film. She produced and choreographed *Dark Angel*, a dance film shot at the Angel Orensanz Synagogue in lower Manhattan and Castle Olavinlinna in Finland. The film features an impressive cast including Hannu Hyttinen, Felicia Norton, Nina Stein-White, Leslie Myers, Sjourd DeJong, Gary Galbraith, Elizabeth Auclair, Julian Burger, and 20 other dancers and a musical score by Davud Majzlin and sound design by Eve Cuyen.

Sasha’s work has reached audiences through numerous prestigious platforms and festivals including Dancers Over 40, American Dance Guild, American Dance Festival, Jacob’s Pillow, Booking Dance, Edinburgh Fringe Festival, Scottish Storytelling Centre. The repertory has been featured at venues such as the Nehru Centre and Rudolf Steiner Theatre in London, Fazil Manzil in Paris, the Ancient Amphitheater in Istanbul, Kannon Dance in Russia, the Savonlinna International Dance and Opera Festival in Finland, and the Merangarh Fort in Jodhpur, India. Not to mention notable NYC venues like the Alvin Ailey Citigroup Theater, St. Mark’s Church, and the 92nd Street Y which have hosted her work.

Since founding Labyrinth Dance Theater, Sasha has created over 40 works that have captivated audiences both nationally and internationally. Her collaborations span the globe, working with stars from the realms of ballet, Broadway, and modern dance, continually pushing the boundaries of her artistic vision.
