By 1990, Sasha decided it was time for a change. Inspired by the ancient Greek Labyrinth, she wanted to create a powerful entity to better express her artistic vision. Thus, Labyrinth Dance Theater was born. The name symbolized a journey into a complex, transformative experience, much like the ancient Labyrinth itself and better represented the work she was doing.
The first major showcases of Sasha’s work took place at the Nikolais/Louis Choreolab in 1989 and the 14th Street Y in 1990. These performances were pivotal, marking her emergence as a significant force in the dance community. One of these notable premieres, *Waltz for a Shattered World* was a collaboration with Mimi Stern-Wolfe of the Downtown Chamber Players which featured 12 dancers, an original score by Avishai Yaar, performed by a live 7- piece orchestra conducted by Ms. Stern-Wolfe.
Sasha’s creative journey is closely intertwined with that of international dance soloist Felicia Norton, a friendship and professional partnership that has spanned 50 years. Together, they have created 10 dances, showcasing work in New York and across five international countries and festivals. Their collaborations include memorable pieces like *NOOR*, *Slither*, *Five Stalks of Wheat*, and *Backstreet*, which also features the Finnish dance star Hannu Hyttinen.
In addition to live performances, Sasha ventured into film. She produced and choreographed *Dark Angel*, a dance film shot at the Angel Orensanz Synagogue in lower Manhattan and Castle Olavinlinna in Finland. The film features an impressive cast including Hannu Hyttinen, Felicia Norton, Nina Stein-White, Leslie Myers, Sjourd DeJong, Gary Galbraith, Elizabeth Auclair, Julian Burger, and 20 other dancers and a musical score by Davud Majzlin and sound design by Eve Cuyen.
